The phrase "I don't understand why they don't just" is very rarely followed by anything insightful. In most cases, the low-hanging fruit has been picked. Not always.

Eleanor McEvoy has a number of lovely songs. Whisper a Prayer to the Moon is beautiful. Great lyric: If I had the powers/I'd give you the stars/the sun and the light/of the moon.
Dark Sun:The Making of the Hydrogen Bomb, by Richard Rhodes. discusses the nuclear arms race. Pretty freaking insane.
