One of the ways I know that I've become an adult is that I have yet to attempt to make myself a bow-and-arrow out of the dowels I have in the closet (it would be awesome).

Eleanor McEvoy has a number of lovely songs. Whisper a Prayer to the Moon is beautiful. Great lyric: If I had the powers/I'd give you the stars/the sun and the light/of the moon.
Dark Sun:The Making of the Hydrogen Bomb, by Richard Rhodes. discusses the nuclear arms race. Pretty freaking insane.
